Salukis were widespread and appeared in Egypt, where they were held in such great esteem that their bodies were often mummified like the bodies of the Pharaohs themselves. The Saluki was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1927. Salukis were first brought into England in 1840. Having tremendous speed, the Saluki was used by the Arabs principally to track and bring down gazelle, the fastest of the antelopes. The Saluki's sight is remarkable, as is his strong constitution and ability to withstand very harsh conditions despite an aristocratic appearance.         INTERESTING TIDBITS The only dog that escapes traditional Muslim prejudices against the species The Saluki was considered a sacred dog sent by Allah Whenever one sees the word "dog" in the Bible, it refers to the Saluki The standoffish Saluki can be your best friend, but it is a bond between equals Walking gait is a high stepping prance Thrives in hot, dry climates There is a considerable size difference between males and females Life Span: Average of 12 to 14 years. Some have been known to live up to 16 years. Litter Size: From 5 to 7 pups. Group: Southern, AKC, Hound Recognized By: CKC, FCI, AKC, UKC, ANKC, NKC, NZKC, APRI, ACR Color: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan tricolor (black, tan and white), black and tan, or any of the previously mentioned colors and white. Hair Length: Long Size: Medium Shedding: Light Shed Male Height: 23-28 inches (58-71 cm) Male Weight: 45-65 pounds (20.5-29.5 kg) Female Height: 18-26 inches (45.7-66 cm) Female Weight: 35-55 pounds (15.9-25 kg) Living Area: The Saluki is not typically recommended for apartment living. Although the breed tends to be fairly well behaved indoors, they do need room to run outside. The Saluki is not happy unless it has the proper space to exercise its long legs. Saluki tend to prefer warmer climates, but can thrive almost anywhere. They do like soft, warm bedding at night.
